艺术设计学院的前身——艺术设计系，始建于1986年。
学院下设环境设计系、服装与服饰设计系、视觉传达设计系、美术学系、工业设计系、中心实验室、综合培训部、刘海粟研究院，传统壁画研究所等等。
学院现设有环境设计、服装与服饰设计、视觉传达设计、美术学、工业设计、产品设计六个专业方向。
学院现有教职工81人，其中教授8人，副教授27人，讲师41人，助教5人，博士8人，硕士51人，留学回国工作教师5人。
学院学术氛围浓郁，涌现一批学术骨干，其中主持国家级课题7项、教育部人文社科课题17项、省级课题24余项。教师在核心期刊上发表论文200余篇，出版专著20余部、教材20余部，100余人次参加全国性美术、设计作品展。
学院聘请中国艺术研究院陈醉、顾森教授、清华大学张夫也教授、华东师范大学顾平教授、北京服装学院胡月教授为特聘教授。学院与清华大学等知名院校建立学术交流和师资培训渠道。为学院发展打下良好基础。
学院办学成效显著，设计学被评为江苏省重点学科；艺术设计专业被评为江苏省特色专业；设计学类（环境设计、视觉传达设计、服装与服饰设计）被评为江苏省重点专业类；服装设计与工程实验教学示范中心被评为江苏省示范实验中心；艺术设计学院被遴选为全国职业学校服装设计与工程专业骨干教师培训点；美术学专业被评为全国美术学专业教学改革试点单位。
学院近10年间，重视教学设施建设，现共建有41间工作室，工作室仪器设备总数为1042台套，其中10万元以上的大型仪器设备有8台套，已拥有4230平方米实践场地。为学生掌握先进的学科前沿技能，提高综合性、创新性、拓展性的现代化实验教学要求，成为应用型创新设计人才提供了保障。
